Mistakes are valuable because we learn from them and make sure to never make it again so that it can help us become better at that skill. Making mistakes can have a both positive and negative outcome. A mistake like I previously stated, lets you learn from them and use that mistake to be better. Making a mistake can also affect that person negatively because lets say that a journalist writes an article and gets it published. He then noticed he made a mistake, once the public realizes the mistakes, he can lose respect and views on his articles/news page. From mistakes you gain more knowledge and you lose credibility.
A whistle-blower is a person who exposes illegal activities. These people are important in journalism because they let the public know news about the government that was kept a secret such as classified things. Revealing information can be both beneficial and disadvantageous to our society. For example, if someone exposed the secrets of the government and the terrorists heard of the information, then we would be in trouble because they wanted to attack us. A benefit is that the citizens will be aware of many important news and maybe even gossip.
Today we did a fun activity that is called "Breakout Edu" which was frustrating, exciting, and required teamwork. I learned that working as a team can help us work faster and improve our communicating skills.
The quote above means that anything that is said or published needs to be checked so that it can be put on a newspaper or an article and can be seen by the public. Fact-checking as a reader and consumer of news and media is very important because if something is published and is read without it being fact-checked, there is a possibility that it can be false. For example, a lady that is thinking of getting a surgery reads an article that says doctors kill thousands of patients during most surgeries. After reading the article, it can change her view on doctors and surgeries.
The purpose of journalists is so that they can inform us about news in different parts of the world and to provide information that tells the truth to the public. Journalists need to make good decisions when they are writing because they can get in big trouble with their boss. They need to keep their work original and do their research carefully. Plagiarism can also get journalists in trouble and then they will get fired and will not be able to get a job as another journalists because others would not want a person that copies off another journalists.
Censorship is when the government controls information and anything written, read, or watched by citizens. An example of censorship is when the government censors or enables an article to be published if it contains bad information about them. China practices censorship and is one of the top three jailers of journalists in the world. China also censors TV shows and websites if they have bad things about the government or if they don't what the citizens to know about something. Another country that has censorship is Vietnam because they do not allow any broadcast to be private. Vietnam also has journalists in jail for daring to publish or write something that is against the government. I think that governments censor some stuff that people write because it can be against them or have something that the government does't want their people to know or see.
Freedom of the Press originated from the First Amendment in the Constitution of the United States. Without the freedom of press, we would not have democracy, which is a government where the people rule. It is important because in America we have the right to say anything that we want without having the fear of getting killed or arrested. In other countries people who oppose the government are sent to prison or even killed for giving their opinion. For example, in Oaxaca, Mexico, teachers are getting killed and disappearing because they were protesting against the government through speaking and writing articles.
News literacy is learning how to read and write new effectively . This matters in our lives today because the age group 11-14 is the time where you need to exercise your brain so that you can use your knowledge for the rest of your life. You need to know how to read and write at that age so that you can be successful in the future.
